Freelancing. Independent work. Gig economy. Contractors. Solopreneurs. No matter what you call it, working for yourself is having its moment right now and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down.

In 2023, there will be a number of exciting opportunities for freelancers with the right skills, a bit of thick skin, and an entrepreneurial dream.

Here are six types of freelance jobs that will be in high demand in 2023:

1. Virtual assistants

With more and more businesses moving online, the demand for virtual assistants will continue to grow. Virtual assistants are responsible for providing administrative support to businesses and individuals, and can work from anywhere with an internet connection. In 2023, there will be a high demand for virtual assistants with experience in a wide range of areas, including customer service, social media management, and data entry.

2. Content creators

The importance of online content only continues to grow. Therefore, the demand for content creators will grow with it in 2023 (and beyond). This could include written work, video creation, and social media specialists, all of whom are responsible for creating and publishing engaging content for businesses and individuals. In 2023, there will be a particular demand (take it from our friend Tom, social media strategist) for content creators with experience in niche areas, such as health, wellness, and sustainability.

3. Graphic designers

(Almost) everyone can spot great design, but not everyone can create it. As businesses continue to prioritize their online presence, the demand for those who can create engaging visuals that also communicate meaning and value will only rise. Graphic designers are responsible for visual content, such as logos, websites, and marketing materials, that help businesses stand out online. In 2023, there will be a high demand for graphic designers with experience in a wide range of areas, including branding, web design, and illustration.

4. Web developers

The demand for web developers will continue to grow in 2023, as businesses and individuals look to create and maintain their own websites. Web developers are responsible for building and maintaining websites, and can work in a variety of industries, from e-commerce to healthcare. In 2023, there will be a particular demand for web developers with experience in newer technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.

5. Social media managers

You already know this. Social media continues to dominate the online landscape meaning the need for creative and strategic thinkers on various platforms is more important than ever. Social media managers are responsible for creating and implementing social media strategies for businesses, and can work in a wide range of industries. In 2023, there will be a high demand for social media managers with experience in emerging platforms, such as TikTok and Discord.

6. Translators

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the demand for translators will also grow in 2023. Translators are responsible for converting written or spoken material from one language to another, and can work in a wide range of industries, from finance to entertainment. In 2023, watch for increased demand for translators with experience in Sino-Tibetan, Afro-Asiatic, and Koreanic languages.

Freelancing isn't going anywhere in 2023, in fact McKinsey reports that one third of the workforce in the US is independent workers. The demand for virtual assistants, content creators, graphic designers, web developers, social media managers, and translators (and other work - conventional or unconventional) will continue to grow, providing a wealth of opportunities for those with the right skills and experience.
